First birthday cake
Pastel layers, a marzipan rainbow and lamb, with the child’s name. A gentler, photogenic option for a first birthday.
A first birthday is different from the later ones: the cake is really for the parents, and the photographs last far longer than the experience. So for this we suggest softer colours, fewer but larger decorations and a cleaner build.
The version shown has a pink cream coating with a marzipan rainbow and lamb on top, spheres around the base, and the child’s name across the front. The name is shaped by hand from sugar paste.
Worth thinking through
- A one-year-old does not eat cake. It is better to size it for the adults present and ask separately for a small “smash cake” piece for the child if it is needed for photographs.
- Less colouring, lighter cream: at this age that is typically what parents ask for.
- Among the flavours, the vanilla and cream and the fruit versions are the most popular.
Lead time: one and a half weeks, because of the marzipan decorations.
